Acid reflux occurs when the liquid content of the stomach backs up into the oesophagus and makes the stomach weak. According to Ayurveda, it occurs when a person has an imbalance of Pitta dosha (fire or heat element). Provoked Pitta leads to the increase in acidic content in the stomach fluids which then refluxes and backs upwards to the oesophagus and causes the acid reflux symptoms like chest pain, heartburn, pain while swallowing, nausea, sour belching, chronic dry cough, and other symptoms.

In this modern-day lifestyle, there are many factors that increase the Pitta dosha. They are:

  • Consuming hot food
  • Consuming too spicy food
  • Eating oily, fried, and greasy foods
  • Skipping breakfast regularly
  • Irregular eating pattern
  • Sleeping soon after eating heavy meals
  • Drinking too much coffee, tea, or alcohol
