Heartburn – Despite what the name implies, it has nothing to do with the heart. Heartburn is nothing but a burning sensation in the chest that occurs when the stomach acid backs up into the oesophagus which is the 10-inch tube that connects the mouth and stomach.

When this happens, the heartburn will last for a few minutes or several hours. This will be an unpleasant feeling that will make you feel that the last meal is coming back into your throat. It will be very uncomfortable and bring a burning sensation to your chest.

We all know that stomach acid is used to break down the food we eat and its something that the stomach has no trouble handling. But the oesophagus on the other hand will feel irritated with it. The lower oesophagal sphincter – a circular ring of muscles at the tube’s base, usually acts as a valve to keep the stomach acid and digest food in the stomach and out of the oesophagus.

When the valve is relaxed, the food that is consumed will pass through it to reach the stomach. When it is contracted the valve will prevent the food and acid from backing up into the oesophagus. In some cases, this valve will act abnormally and the stomach acid will travel back into the oesophagus which causes acid reflux. Heartburn is a common symptom of acid reflux.

  • Eating quickly or overeating
  • Lying down soon after eating

Acid reflux is one of the health issues which can be cured with it. You can chew a few slices of fresh ginger if you are comfortable otherwise you can make ginger tea and drink it to cure heartburn.

How to use it?

  • Take a few slices of fresh ginger.
  • Boil a cup of water and add these slices to it.
  • Let it boil for ten minutes.
  • Now, strain the mixture and add honey to it to enhance the taste.
